Workshop Retreat, Italy Includes

The Modern Impressionist workshop retreat at the enchanting 1400 acre estate, Castle Gubbio in Italy. Instructing this weeklong immersive painting event is internationally renowned artist and Vice President of the Royal Institute of Oil Painters, Instructed by Tiffanie Mang

Castle Gubbio was built in the Middle Ages to defend the town of Gubbio against Perugia. The castle has retained its defensive character from the outside, but four years of intensive renovation have turned the interior into an extremely welcoming and comfortable house.

The castle is surrounded by a park with century old trees, large lawns and a beautiful pool which looks out over the hilly 1400-acre estate. The estate is signposted with beautiful walks, and in the appropriate season guests can even go truffle hunting with local experts. The owners of the estate are descendants of the family of Napoleon Bonaparte and the castle has been in their family since 1830.

Castello Gubbio is situated on a promontory in Umbria, the region called “the green heart of Italy”, in the territory of Gubbio, surrounded by a large loop of the Chiascio river. It overlooks the Cucco Mount, which has summer sports (trekking and delta plane) and winter sports (skiing) available.

Immerged in an uncontaminated landscape, bordered by woods, grasslands and waters, the history of Castello Gubbio dates back to the middle ages, when it was the heart of the defence of the Commune of Gubbio against Perugia.

The local village can be reached in 8 minutes by car. Gems such as Gubbio, Perugia, Assisi, Cortona, Spoleto and Todi are all within easy reach.

In 1391 Melchiorre Montaiti, Lord Magrano, undertook to go against the Noble Antonio da Montefeltro, Lord of Urbino and Gubbio. Magrano was then severely assaulted with the destruction of its mill (which was built again and still exists today) but the soldiers of the Montefeltro family failed to take over the castle. In 1431 Magrano moved under the jurisdiction of the Dukes of Montefeltro.

About artist

Tiffanie Mang landscape painter, visual development artist

Tiffanie Mang is a landscape painter, visual development artist, and art instructor whose work is rooted in the tradition of painting from life. Working primarily in gouache, she has built a reputation for luminous, atmospheric landscapes that balance careful observation with expressive color, a sensibility honed through years of painting outdoors in the field.

Tiffanie is one of the youngest members of Plein Air Painters of America (PAPA), a distinction that speaks to the depth of her commitment to the plein air tradition. Her gouache landscapes have been exhibited widely since 2018, including in the prestigious California Art Club Gold Medal Exhibition Shows (109th, 110th, and 111th editions). Her work and insights have been featured in publications including Plein Air Magazine and The Artist's Guide Magazine, among others.

Her love of painting from life has always informed her professional animation work. Tiffanie is a visual development artist at Sony Pictures Animation, and was among the painter-animators selected to work on Loving Vincent, the Oscar-nominated animated feature told entirely through hand-painted oil paintings in the style of Van Gogh. Based in Gdańsk, Poland for six months, she worked alongside 125 artists from around the world, personally animating six scenes of the film.

Teaching is equally central to her practice. Tiffanie runs her own digital and gouache painting courses and mentorships, through which she has personally guided more than 200 students across three years from Europe and Asia to Australia and South America. Her instruction draws directly from her plein air background, emphasizing how to truly see light, value, and color relationships before putting brush to paper.

Gallery Experience

Judd Mercer is a contemporary landscape painter and Colorado native obsessed with telling stories through light. Working on plein air and in the studio, Judd explores the tension between ourselves and the landscape. Judd is a Laguna Plein Air Painters Signature Artist and has been recognized by Modern Impressionist Magazine and Plein Air Magazine in their “10 Artist to Collect Now” feature. Judd is currently represented by Abend Gallery in Denver, Colorado.

Artist Statement:
Plein air is like meditation. You have to slow down and pay attention. When you feel a place with all your senses— the sun on your skin, the grass underfoot, the smell of the wind—you start to really feel it. A painting is (hopefully) a little piece of that feeling.
